President and Sister Kunz joined other faith leaders in celebrating the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21 with a ceremony held at the Peace Bell in the garden in front of Sukhbaatar Square. This year’s global theme was “Promote Peace Through Action.”

The program opened with United Nations Resident Coordinator Joap van Hierden reading the Peace Message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In his remarks, Secretary-General Guterres called for an end to violence and oppression, urging nations and individuals alike to unite their voices in the cause of peace.

“Our war-torn world is crying out for peace,” his message read. “Conflict is spreading, laws are being broken, families are being displaced. Peace is the work of everyone — we must stop the gunfire, end the suffering, and build bridges of stability and prosperity. Where there is peace, there is hope.”

Following the reading, leaders from a wide range of faith traditions — including Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Shinto, and the Baha’i faith — offered prayers for peace. Following each prayer, faith leaders concluded with the symbolic ringing of the Peace Bell and the lighting of candles. Among those representing their faith communities were President and Sister Kunz of the Mongolia Ulaanbaatar Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The International Day of Peace was first established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 to strengthen the ideals of peace among nations and peoples worldwide.
