Serving in the Homeless Shelter One of Many Highlights of Elder and Sister Kim’s Mission Tour

On October 10, Elder and Sister Kim made the five-hour flight from Tokyo to Mongolia to begin a weeklong mission tour of the Mongolia Ulaanbaatar Mission. Having previously served as an Area Authority Seventy with responsibility for Mongolia, Elder Kim already had a deep love for the country and was thrilled to return. “I love the people and I love the culture of Mongolia”, he said.

Their visit began with an all-mission Zoom meeting, where Elder Kim invited missionaries to pray earnestly to know whom they could reach out to within the next three days—and then to act on those promptings. At the conclusion of the tour, missionaries shared inspiring experiences and miracles that had come from those sincere prayers. Throughout the week, Elder and Sister Kim met with missionaries in the West, East, and Central Zones in Ulaanbaatar before traveling north to Darkhan to visit the missionaries there. Each conference was filled with inspiring instruction from Elder and Sister Kim.

Before returning to Tokyo, they visited the newly announced site of the Ulaanbaatar Mongolia Temple, where they paused to feel the sacredness of the location.

A particularly meaningful highlight of their visit was offering service at the House of Mercy Catholic Homeless Shelter. Together with other volunteers from Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and the United States, Elder and Sister Kim helped plate and serve warm dumpling soup to more than 100 homeless individuals—a welcome comfort on a cold, snowy Mongolian day.

“This is the true gospel of Jesus Christ,” Elder Kim shared. “It doesn’t matter where you are from—we are all one. We are disciples of Jesus Christ, and we can follow our Savior by helping others.” He continued, “What a tremendous privilege it is to have this opportunity to serve. This is exactly what Jesus Christ taught us: to love God and to love our neighbor. Being here is a blessing to me.” Sister Kim echoed his feelings, saying, “It was amazing to see them receive warm soup on such a cold day. We were so happy to serve them.” Elder Kim concluded his visit by inviting members in Mongolia “to be more mindful of others— to find those who need our help. As we do this, we will become true disciples of Jesus Christ.”
